Dr. Rodewald is senior advisor to the National Immunization Program of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. From 2012 through 2017 he was the team lead for the Expanded Program on Immunization in the World Health Organization China Office. Prior to working for WHO, he served with US CDC’s Immunization Services Division, which administers the public-sector U.S. immunization program - initially as Associate Director for Science, and from 2000 to 2012 as Director. His long-time research interest has been on improving children’s access to vaccines.

He is a recipient of US CDC’s Phil Horne Award in 1999, the Association of State and Territorial Health Official’s National Excellence in Public Health Award in 2005, Southern Illinois University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2012, was a finalist for the 2012 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal, and received the Quancheng Friendship Award from the government of Jinan, China for strengthening public health in Jinan, 2015. He is senior advisor to the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association’s First Vaccination Branch and Immunization Professional Branch and a Council Member of the Global Pediatric Pulmonary Alliance.
